Understanding the Suboxone® Program

Suboxone® contains buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine reduces cravings and withdrawal, while naloxone discourages misuse. It is one of the most widely used treatments for opioid use disorder.

Suboxone® offers fewer clinic visits, a lower risk of misuse compared to full agonists, and the ability to take your medication at home once stabilized.

You may experience mild headache or nausea initially, but most patients adjust within a few weeks. The goal is to feel stable and functional — not sedated.

It is placed under the tongue as a film or tablet and left to dissolve. It should not be chewed or swallowed.

Common side effects include headache, nausea, constipation, and insomnia. These tend to improve as your body adjusts. Your physician will monitor and adjust your dose.

Yes. Certain medications and substances can interact with Suboxone®. Always inform your care team of everything you are taking.

Treatment length varies. Some patients take Suboxone® for months, others for longer. Your care team will help you decide the right duration based on your progress.

Suboxone® is a partial agonist with a lower risk of sedation. It also allows for take-home dosing earlier in treatment. Your physician will recommend the best option for you.

Yes. Many patients receive take-home prescriptions once stabilized, reducing the need for daily clinic visits.

Suboxone® has a strong safety profile when used as directed. The naloxone component provides an added safeguard against misuse.

Yes—Suboxone® (buprenorphine/naloxone) can be prescribed during pregnancy when it’s clinically appropriate and supervised by a qualified provider. Treatment decisions are individualized to keep both parent and baby as safe as possible, and the care plan is adjusted based on symptoms, stability, and pregnancy needs.
